Nothing to do with cancer, thank goodness, but something's come up.
Oliver has a hernia.
I took him into the surgery clinic to get looked at after some exchange with photos to his pedi of it -(although it wasn't poking out at this time of this appointment, it has popped in and out 4 times now (we push it back in when it pops out, and each time while doing something that causes him to strain some, like the last two times he was coughing really hard after his drink went down the wrong pipe).
She called it a typical epigastric hernia and what is poking out through the muscle wall is fat. Its not an emergency at the moment but needs to be repaired. We are waiting on them to call us with the scheduled date/time.
The surgery department says it can be about a month at most because they are very busy, but there are always cancelations that happen. Said we'd know by tomorrow afternoon. It is outpatient surgery but given his medical history, they may want to admit him the day before for observation, and/or keep him for the day after for the same reasons. She is going to talk to his cardiologist and oncologist before making that call.
Now, if something more pokes through when/if it happens in the mean time and gets stuck and painful, then that becomes an emergency. I'll post when I have the info on when his surgery will be. The surgery itself is simple, less than an hour. They make an incision at the location and then repair and tie everything up under so there are no outer stitches. Keep bandage on for a week and no strenuous abdominal activity for a little bit.
This will be his 5th scar on his chest/torso area. Do you get some kind of prize for that? (Open heart Surgery scar, 2 chest tube scars with that surgery, and his broviac scar).
Oliver just turned 7! (Miles just turned 3 a few days prior to that). School starts in 2 weeks, not sure if this will be taken care of by then. :/
His next Oncology appointment is Sept 3rd.
